As a new sailor, I was initially convinced to scrap the seized Alado furling system on my Cal 2-27. Before doing so, I contacted and spoke with Shane, who quickly changed my mind. The foils were still sound, so he recommended 3D-printing a replacement drum instead of replacing the entire system.
Over several calls, Shane guided me through the measurements, forestay removal, and installation process.
The new drum fit perfectly, and the furler now operates smoothly. For $180 and a few hours of work, I avoided thousands in replacement costs—and gained valuable rigging and safety knowledge along the way.
